TST Wed. June 12, 2024 "On-Board-Diagnostics - OBD on UDS/J1979-2 - A Brave New World " w/ Bob Gruszczynski

This webinar will provide information that is essential in diagnosing today's OBD II vehicles.

• In late 2010 the SAE J2012 Task Force which defines all generic emission-related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) determined that the space dedicated to Powertrain DTCs would be depleted by MY2020.
• SAE then worked with CARB and the International Standards Organization (ISO) to allow implementation of an enhanced scheme of DTC definition based on the ISO standard #14229 - Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS). In addition to DTC updates, CARB asked for some enhanced features related to J1979-type data. CARB, SAE and ISO worked together to provide an emissions-only subset of ISO 14229 and it is embodied in SAE J1979-2 and updates to SAE J2012.
• This new information is referred to as OBDonUDS. OBDonUDS is required of OEMs to begin in MY2023 with phase-in to full implementation by MY2027. This presentation provides an overview of information contained in OBDonUDS that can help you get a jump on diagnosing problem vehicles.

Bob has a BSEE from Lawrence Technological University. For over 30 years, Bob has  been involved in powertrain control systems. Bob has a United States Patent for his work  in Misfire Detection. Bob is the retired OBD Communication Expert formerly with  Volkswagen Group of America. His duties included investigation of OBD communicationrelated issues in the field and technical representation for the Volkswagen Group in North  America in OBD communication-related matters. He is also past Chairman of the SAE  E/E Diagnostics Committee and past Chairman of the J1962 Vehicle Diagnostic  Connector Task Force Task Force. Bob is also an organizer for both the SAE OBD  Symposium SAE World Congress and a former member of the SAE Executive Technical  Standards Board.
